Ceramics Classes

Instructor

Rich Conti

Rich Conti initiated the current ceramics program at Byrdcliffe. He has been the director of the program 11 of the past 13 years. He received his BFA from Alfred University and in 1999, was a resident at the Archie Bray Foundation. Rich's work is firmly grounded in functional pottery, where simple aesthetics and the details of function are combined to bring objects into existence for daily use. Known as the "El Camino" of potters, when asked about whether he considers himself an artist or crafts person, Rich responds, "Is the El-Camino a car or a truck?"

Open studio available when classes are not in session. Open studio Monday thru Saturday. Closed on Sundays. $50 materials fee includes clay glazes and firing of first box of clay. Addition clay and firings after first box has an additional charge.

Ceramic classes take place in the Lower Level of Upper Barn on Upper Byrdcliffe Road, Woodstock, NY.

Tile and Handbuilding Classes

Rich Conti, Founder and Director of the Byrdcliffe Pottery Program will conduct tile and hand–building classes at the Byrdcliffe Ceramics Studio in the Byrdcliffe Barn beginning 2/17/10. Each session will consist of six two–hour sessions, including a make–up class at the end of each session. Students will work on a variety of decorative tile projects incorporating various methods including relief, mosaic and plaster mold as well as learn techniques to create sculptural or functional hand–built projects.

Tile and hand–building classes, mosaic, relief, or decorative: Work on the tile project that you always wanted to make! Create accent tiles, scenic or decorative designed tiles. You can choose the project you like to learn the necessary techniques and bring your ideas to fruition.

If tile making isn't your thing, then explore hand–building in clay. Expand on your existing knowledge of hand building in clay or learn the basics. Projects will be based on your skill level. Classes are small which allows for ample individual attention plus open studio hours for when classes are not in session. We can’t think of a better way to spend your time then in the ceramic studio working on that special project!
