Byrdcliffe will be holding an ARTIST SPOTLIGHT for the wonderful visual artist Katherine Burger this holiday season on Saturday, December 15, 11:00 am to 6:00 pm at the Byrdcliffe Shop on 36 Tinker Street in Woodstock, NY. The Artist Spotlight will focus on Katherine’s work, and everybody will be able to meet her at the Byrdcliffe Shop and find out more about the skills and artistry involved in her colorful and whimsical paper collages.
Katherine Burger has been making collages since childhood; when she was 10 years old, she wrote “I want to be a cat artist when I grow up.”
Today, animals of all sorts are featured in her work. Cats are still a favored subject, along with dogs, birds, elephants, bears, salamanders, and more. She finds inspiration in the bold shapes, mixed patterns and flat graphic qualities of poster art, classic children’s book illustrations, and Persian miniatures. Katherine has illustrated several books, and is also an internationally produced playwright; many of her images suggest a story, often with a humorous twist. She takes great pleasure in playing around with colors, textures, and shapes, and hopes that this joy and sense of play is conveyed to the viewer.
Katherine has deep connections to Woodstock’s artistic organizations . For eighteen years she was the Director of the Artist-in-Residence Program at Byrdcliffe and for the last five years has been the House Manager at the Maverick Concert Hall.
A portion of all sales is donated to environmental and animal protection groups.
