On Friday, August 7, Saturday, August 8 at 8:00 pm, and Sunday August 9 at 3:00 pm, Choreography on the Edge will present its 26th performance at the beautiful, historic and newly renovated Byrdcliffe Theater in Woodstock, NY. Since 1985, this innovative program has given professional choreographers and dancers a chance to experiment and push their boundaries, much to the benefit of Hudson Valley’s lovers of dance!
The program this year promises to stretch the audience’s envelope as well. The line-up is comprised of choreographers and dancers spanning a wide range of styles and techniques; primarily modern dance, contemporary ballet and cultural motifs expressed through Irish step dancing like you’ve never seen it before, in pieces choreographed by Joel Hanna (from the original cast of Riverdance). A number of choreographers will be performing their work as solos, and others will work as duets and trios. Among this stellar group are: Laura Ward with Octavia Cup Dance Theatre and clyde forth with Lokasparśa Dance Projects. Jennifer Yackel, and Sara Senecal will perform solos of their work. Leighann Kowalsky, Laura Teeter, Rowan Willigan and Angela Maffia among others will also present works. New this year are Bella Kosmacher and Aubrey Contini who will present new works with members of the Ulster Ballet and Vanaver Caravan.
Choreography on the Edge began in the late 1980’s, when a group of local choreographers decided to present a showcase of new work, the only requirement being that they combine movement and music in a way that was completely new for them. The presentation was so well received that it became an annual event that drew the participation of non-local choreographers as well, moving from the Woodstock Town Hall to its current home at the Byrdcliffe Theater. Keeping the experimental nature of any artistic endeavor alive is always a challenge, one that Choreography on the Edge has risen to time and again. To maintain this focus on fresh, innovative work and a high standard of professionalism, choreographers are asked to dig deep, incorporating elements they haven’t used before. The pieces are not auditioned and most of them will be premiering, giving the work an immediacy that engages the audience in a more energetic and intimate way.
Choreography on the Edge is produced by Zack Jacobs with greatly appreciated support from The Ulster Ballet Company, the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, and The Bardavon Opera House.
