Jay Collins is a multi-instrumentalist whose skills and sound are the very essence of solid musicianship. Along with his band the Northern Resistance, Collins mixes jazz, soul, New Orleans rhythms, and blues with a distinct funk appeal that makes it impossible for listeners to sit still. His gritty vocals are powerful and his songwriting ambitious, prompting Time Out New York to exclaim "His soulful croak definitely deserves to be heard!"

Before breaking out on his own, Collins was the saxophone player of choice for Levon Helm, Donald Fagen, Little Feat, and Gregg Allman, also holding the role of musical director for the Gregg Allman Band for 5 years. He has played on two Grammy-winning recordings with Helm and a platinum-selling DVD with the Allman Brothers Band. He is also featured on horns and arrangements on the posthumously released Gregg Allman album, Southern Blood (2017). Collins continues to perform and arrange with the horn section at Levon Helm's Ramble in Woodstock.

Jay Collins and the Northern Resistance's new release is The John Brown EP on Decibel Music. For this recording, Collins called on his former band-mate guitarist Scott Sharrard, as well as the youthful sensation from Woodstock, guitarist and vocalist Connor Kennedy. The EP finds Collins singing and playing at the top of his game with 5 new songs--short and straight to the point, including his moving historical narrative, "John Brown."

It was his work as a New York City-based jazz saxophonist that brought Jay Collins and blues guitarist Chris Bergson together. "A lot of the jazz musicians that I knew didn’t seem to be that deep into the blues," Bergson says. "It was like a breath of fresh air to me to meet a jazz player like Jay and we quickly found that we had a lot in common." Bergson fronts the Chris Bergson Band and is a noted jazz and blues guitarist and songwriter who has played regularly at Levon Helm's Midnight Ramble and New York City clubs from Jazz Standard to the Rodeo Bar. Collins's and Bergson's collaboration began in 2004 during a residency at Jazz Standard, which is where the seeds of the Chris Bergson Band germinated; since then each has played on the others' albums, with both Collins and Bergson being masters of improvisation.

On August 4 at the Byrdcliffe Barn, Bergson will play with Collins's band; the evening will also feature Bergson's original songs. In addition to Jay Collins and guest Chris Bergson, the Northern Resistance features Peter Dougan (guitar), Diego Voglino (drums), and Matt Clohesy (bass).

The Byrdcliffe Barn, built in 1902 as a working barn for artist residents of the utopian Byrdcliffe Art Colony, is a beautiful, rustic space atop Mount Guardian in Woodstock. The Barn has hosted the likes of Jack DeJohnette, Simone Felice, and Kate Pierson, and is also the home to Byrdcliffe's thriving ceramics program. Tickets are $20, or $15 for Byrdcliffe members and students with ID. Cash bar. Concert at 8:00 pm; doors open at 7:30 pm. General admission; no reserved seating.
