UP NEXT: Exhibition celebrating the latest generation of upstate artists at the Kleinert/James

Generations of artists have moved to the Hudson Valley seeking inspiration, space to spread out, and a creative community. The exhibition UP NEXT at the Kleinert/James Center for the Arts features the work of fifteen artists who have relocated to this fertile area within the last few years. Curator Arlene Shechet notes, “As an artist myself, I curated this show to draw attention to the latest generation of artists living upstate and to celebrate disparate points of view, subject matter, and material use. More than a thematic thread, what ties them together is their geographic location at this point in their emerging careers. The show is stitched together by my vision and sense of how these artists speak to each other through their work.”

UP NEXT includes sculpture, textiles, paintings, site-specific installations, ceramics, and other media by artists Emily Brownawell, Kirsten Deirup, Eric Ehrnschwender, Jessica Gaddis, Daniel Giordano, Shanti Grumbine, Amanda Heidel, Marka Kiley, Athena LaTocha, Isabel Mallet, Padma Rajendran, McKenzie Raley, Charlie Smith, Carter Spurrier, and Andrew Woolbright.

Curator Arlene Shechet is a sculptor living and working in New York City and the Hudson Valley. Her work is in major museum collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Centre Pompidou (Paris), The National Gallery of Art (Washington DC), and many others. Notably, her oeuvre also includes curatorial museum installations, most recently including Porcelain, No Simple Matter: Arlene Shechet and the Arnhold Collection at The Frick Collection (New York) and From Here On Now at The Phillips Collection (Washington DC).

The exhibition opens to the public on Friday, October 18. Participating artists will take part in a discussion with curator Arlene Shechet on Saturday October 19 at 3:00 pm. A reception follows from 4:00 – 6:00 pm. UP NEXT will be on view through December 1.
