SUMMARY:"Salvage Stories" Opening reception
DESCRIPTION:Seven sculptors transform the mundane trash of contemporary society into sculpture that ranges from emotional resonance to historical allusion\, grounded earthiness\, and musical innuendo. Though their decision to repurpose discarded detritus connects to the environmental movements of our time\, more significantly\, these seven artists have chosen upcycled materials because of the compelling textures\, colors\, and indeed also mystique of the items’ utilitarian origins. This show is an exhibition of contrasts between the “high” and “low” of society’s creations\, the destruction of consumerism and the discoveries of art\, the ugly and the beautiful\, the serious and the playful. With skillful twists of form\, manipulation of abstraction\, and subtle – and sometimes even quite direct – references to the figure\, these sculptors bring the long-forgotten stories of human refuse into the poignant personal stories of the artist\, and in the process\, turn the ashes of our manmade world into poignant works of art. Curated by Alice Zinnes and Carol Diamond \nABOUT THE ARTISTS \nEric Banks– Using everything from lint to rusty pipes\, Eric Banks creates unified raw constructions of hope within decay and humor within life’s tortured complexities. \nKen Butler is a musician-artist. Recombining disassociated found objects\, he constructs – and often performs on innovative musical instruments\, transforming our useless waste into objects of whimsy\, joy\, and rhythmic musicality. \nIn Carol Diamond‘s artworks\, found street “junk” of metal\, glass\, concrete\, fabric\, and wire mesh expresses tensions that synthesize into a vision of unity\, repair\, and wholeness. \nBonny Leibowitz produces objects\, installations\, and paintings utilizing manmade and organic materials in ways that often disguise their origin\, blurring the boundaries between the manufactured and the natural. \nReferencing ancient artifacts\, Shari Mendelson’s glistening vessels\, made from plastic bottles\, are so elegant\nand authentic\, that their humble origins are all but impossible to believe. \nWith repurposed cardboard boxes\, concrete\, and sand particles\, Mark Van Wagner’s sculptures suggest archaeological\, architectural\, and anthropomorphic metaphors of conflict and ruin\, protected within a shield of humor and restoration. \nFragility and healing are themes that characterize Shivani Patel’s sculptures and wall pieces. Assembled from scavenged metals\, umbrellas and found rods\, old jewelry\, and other sundry things\, they evoke an intimate poetry of twisting costume design\, and the ornate details of ancient religious architecture\, reflecting her family’s Hindu-Indian heritage. \nABOUT THE CURATORS: \nAlice Zinnes has had seven solo NYC exhibitions\, as well as shows upstate and beyond.  She is a tenured adjunct full professor at Pratt Institute\, and writer of @Entropvisions\, a blog about art exhibitions. She has been an environmentalist her whole life. Between 2007 and 2014\, she was at the center of the burgeoning anti-fracking movement\, and more recently\, she served as the Sustainability Coordinator in her department at Pratt.  She has received awards from The VCCA\, Cummington Community for the Arts\, and The National Academy of Design. \nCarol Diamond is an artist and educator based in New York City.  Her current body of work focuses on hand-built sculpture made from found materials.  Awards include a Purchase Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters\, and the National Academy Museum’s Edwin Palmer Prize.  Her art writing has been published in journals such as Art Critical and Two Coats of Paint. Diamond’s artwork is included in public and private collections\, including the Portland\, Oregon Museum of Art. \nRuin\, reconstruction\, and rebirth come into play in the spontaneous processes of these 7 artists – processes open to subconscious unveilings – and which present as enigmatic expressions of the rich mutability of materials. \nFor the exhibition’s closing event\, Ken Butler will perform his original music on some of the sculptural instruments he has made. \nOpening Reception: Saturday\, August 2\, 4-6 pm\nClosing Event and Ken Butler Musical Performance: Sunday\, Sept. 14\, 2-5 pm

SUMMARY:"Don Barry: A Quixotic Exploration" free film screening
DESCRIPTION:DON BARRY is a 94 minute cinematic exploration (in English and Spanish\, with subtitles) that seeks to place the first great modern narrative\, Don Quixote\, into the lives of real people in a real place. \nThe film introduces the experimental filmmaker Barry Gerson\, now in his eighties\, as Don Barry\, who mixes his own thoughts into the character’s speech\, much as Miguel de Cervantes’ hero mingled chivalric quotes with his own ideas. Genda Monter\, a young animator\, is the Don’s assistant Sanchia. The setting is the Mexican city of Guanajuato during its high season. \nDon Barry‘s themes are the same as those in Cervantes’ great novel: mortality\, dreams versus accomplishment\, and the means by which one retains sanity in a mad world. In addition\, dives into the beauty of Gerson’s experimental cinema and his work at taking what he’s learned about light as an inspiration for healing. As well as the beauty of allowing one’s life work to become transformative\, and to allow the landscapes we inhabit to provide catharsis for inner growth. \nMusic is by Karen y Los Remedios and Jiony\, two contemporary existential Cumbia artists; the GTO Imp Symph and its talented composers Michael Severens and Alex Applegate; and the late folk-jazz genius John Martyn. \nwritten directed and produced by Paul Smart \nQ&A with filmmakers after the screening \nFree\, donations accepted \n \n

One of Sanders recent books\, illustrated by Rick Veitch\, is Broken Glory\, the Final Years of Robert F. I could place my mimeograph machine there\, and great poet Allen Ginsberg and I had been discussing forming a Committee to Legalize Marijuana\, which I thought could be run from the bookstore. I started looking for a storefront to rent in the Lower East Side. I intended to call it the Peace Eye Bookstore. \nI was a new father\, had family obligations\, and needed to have a source of income beyond weekends at the Times Square cigar store where I worked the late-night shift. I could put my mimeograph machine there\, and create a cultural facility and the world’s first mimeo print center as well.  \nI signed a two-year lease for Peace Eye on November 10\, 1964. The first year was $50 a month; which went to $60 for the second year.  \nThere was much group singing among my friends from the peace and Civil Rights movements\, and many an acquaintance had a guitar at the ready in their apartments. \nI had been inspired by a benefit for the General Strike for Peace at which an unknown singer with a harmonica wired to his face named Bob Dylan had wowed the crowd at the Living Theater on 6th Avenue.  \nWe began rehearsing at the Peace Eye Bookstore.  Our afternoon rehearsals at Peace Eye became packed with our friends who wanted to savor our songs. Tuli and I added the musical duo of Steve Weber and Peter Stampfel  (also performed The Holy Modal Rounders)\, so we now had a five-man ensemble. \nOur first concert was at the March ’65 opening of Israel Young’s famous Folklore Center at its new location on 6th Avenue and West Third Street in NYC.  The night before our first concert\, Ken Weaver’s buffalo hide drum was stolen during a break-in at Peace Eye\, so for our World Premiere Ken performed with a drum made out of a cardboard Krasdale peach box!!! \n– Ed Sanders \n\n\n\n\nThe Fugs – Celebrating the 60th Anniversary Year of their First Concert\nByrdcliffe Barn | 485 Upper Byrdcliffe Road\, Woodstock\, NY. \nFriday\, August 22nd\nSaturday\, August 23rd\nDoors open at 7:30 pm\, concert at 8 pm. \n\n\n\n\nTICKETS:\n$30/person WBG members\n$35/person not-yet-members\n$35/person at door  \npurchase tickets for Friday’s performance \npurchase tickets for Saturday’s performance \nQuestions: 845.679.2079

\n\n\n\n\nTICKETS:\n$30/person WBG members\n$35/person not-yet-members\n$35/person at doorpurchase tickets for Friday’s performance \npurchase tickets for Saturday’s performance \nQuestions: 845.679.2079
