SUMMARY:Closing Reception for "Going Upstate: The Avery Family in Woodstock"
DESCRIPTION:Sean Cavanaugh\, Water\, Mist and Mountain\, 2018\, watercolor on paper \n  \ncurated by Bruce Weber\nExhibition on view July 11 – October 25\, 2026\nClosing reception\nSaturday October 17\, 2026\, 3-5 PM \nFor 125 years\, Byrdcliffe has cultivated a community of artists at the base of Mount Guardian in the hamlet of Woodstock\, NY.  Founded on principles of camaraderie\, fidelity to quality\, a reverence for nature and deep respect for fellow creators\, Byrdcliffe has welcomed an impressive roster of artists and thinkers to this important art colony. \nWhile many of these creative denizens went on to reknown — Laszlo Moholy-Nagy\, Bob Dylan\, Eva Hesse\, Philip Guston\, Thorstein Veblen and many more — few so embodied the spirit of Byrdcliffe than the Avery Family. \nSpanning four generations\, the exhibition brings together works by Milton Avery and Sally Michel Avery\, their daughter March Avery\, her husband Philip G. Cavanaugh\, their son Sean Cavanaugh\, and his child Delilah Cavanaugh. For the first time\, the public will have the opportunity to experience an intimate look at the art created in Woodstock by the Avery family — a body of work deeply rooted in American modernism.

SUMMARY:The Last Supper: A Grand Guignol Love Story
DESCRIPTION:A death dinner. A zombie apocalypse. Love\, democracy\, and everyone fighting for a seat at the last supper. \nPURCHASE TICKETS \nTHE LAST SUPPER\nA Grand Guignol Love Story by David Simpatico \nWhat if your last supper really were your last supper?\nAs civilization collapses around them\, seven wildly different survivors gather under one roof for an impossible dinner. At the center of the evening is Edgar\, an elderly man who has decided to die on his own terms. A death doula has been brought in to help him make that final passage. But Edgar’s carefully planned death dinner is interrupted by a rather larger problem: the dead are rising. \nPolitical zealots\, believers\, skeptics\, lovers\, old gods\, new machines and zombies all demand a place at the table. Some want to eat. Some want to preach. Some want to decide who has the right to live—or die. And some just want to survive until morning. The Last Supper is a darkly comic Grand Guignol love story about the collision between individual choice and collective survival. Beneath the blood\, absurdity and zombie mayhem is a surprisingly intimate question: When everything falls apart\, what do we owe one another? \nRound The Bend Theater presents this special staged reading at Byrdcliffe Theater as part of its larger commitment to developing and co-producing bold new plays and supporting playwrights. And because the apocalypse has impeccable timing\, we’re making a Halloween party of it. Come dressed as a zombie and join the parade and contest! \n  \n$25 tickets\nPURCHASE TICKETS \n  \nABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT \nDavid Simpatico’s career highlights include: the book/stage adaptation of Disney’s High School\nMusical; The Screams of Kitty Genovese (Jonathan Larson Award; music by Will\nTodd); Garden of Light\, libretto for choral symphony\, withcomposer Aaron Jay Kernis. His\nmusical adaptation of Twelve Angry Men\, music and lyrics by Michael Holland\, received its\nworld premiere production in June\, 2022 at Theater Latte Da in Minneapolis\, directed by Peter\nRothstein\, and a subsequent production at Asolo Rep in Sarasota\, Florida. His grand opera\, The\nLife and Death(s) of Alan Turing\, with music by Justine F. Chen\, received its world premiere at\nChicago Opera Theater in March\, 2023\, also directed by Peter Rothstein. He is currently\nadapting Wally Lamb’s She’s Come Undone\, with co-bookwriter Darrah Cloud\, and\ncomposer/lyricist\, Michael Holland. He is also working on That Hellbound Train\, a new jazz\nopera with composer Lisa DeSpain\, based on the short story by Robert Bloch. His play\, Ex-Gay\nBar\, was named Honorable Mention in the Carlo Annoni International Playwriting Award\, as\nwell as receiving the inaugural Voices For Change Action Grant by ArtsWestchester. Most\nrecently\, his oratorio adaptation of Dickens’s A Christmas Carol\, with score by Will Todd\,\nreceived its first production with Opera Holland Park at Sinfonia Smith Square in London\, Dec\,\n2024\, 2025 and 2026. \nDavid is an alumnus of the Composer Librettist Development Program at American Lyric\nTheater. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University\, and an\nundergraduate from Northwestern University\, where he studied playwriting under Linda\nJenkins.  He has received support from Edward Albee Foundation\, Millay Colony\, NY Theatre\nWorkshop\, Eugene O’Neill Foundation and Rhinebeck Writer’s Retreat.  David is a proud\nmember of the Dramatists Guild\, and with playwright Darrah Cloud\, is co-founder of Howl\nPlaywrights in Rhinebeck\, NY\, where he lives with his husband and muse\, Robert C. SUMMARY:Connan Mockasin
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS SOLD OUT\nThere will not be a waitlist for this performance \nByrdcliffe and Sister Midnight are thrilled to welcome Connan Mockasin to the historic Byrdcliffe Theater for one performance only. This is the first time Connan has played in the US since 2019. \nConnan Mockasin is a New Zealand singer-songwriter\, composer and record producer. Described as “a psych-funk oddball…a contrarian”\, Mockasin played a role in the contemporary crossover of psychedelia with indie music\, and has been praised for his unique approach to songwriting. \nConnan’s third album\, Jassbusters\, is his first in five years. An unclassifiable\, unconventional album that neither picks up from nor abandons the modes of 2013’s widely-embraced Caramel or its 2010 predecessor Forever Dolphin Love\, Jassbusters foreshadows a five-part melodrama film titled Bostyn ‘n Dobsyn\, created by Mockasin. Jassbusterssoundtracks the unpredictable narrative of the film in eclectic\, electric ways. \nWhether bending genres or collaborating with artists like James Blake\, MGMT\, and Charlotte Gainsbourg\, Connan Mockasin has always maneuvered in mysterious ways. After touring with the likes of Radiohead and Neil & Liam Finn (Crowded House)\, the R&B surrealist continued assembling a cult around his theater\, nay spectacle of life with Bostyn ‘n Dobsyn screenings and Jassbusters performances throughout October and November 2018. \n$35 general admission
