Jules Shear performs “The Surreal Housewives of Woodstock”
The Surreal Housewives of Woodstock is a unique, poetic 15-song production that simultaneously celebrates and satirizes the legendary bohemian culture of Woodstock, New York. The performance represents a rare artistic collaboration between Shear, who composed the music, and the legendary activist and poet Ed Sanders of The Fugs, who penned the lyrics.
Moving seamlessly between lighthearted, witty snapshots and portraits of deeper social commentary, the production introduces audiences to a series of catchy songs based on the town’s vibrant archetypes. Featured songs in the lineup include “Anger Management Annie,” “Too Many Causes Tara,” “Pot Farm Pam,” and the satirical centerpiece, “The Great Dust-Up at the Vegancue (The Vegan Barbecue).” Through this playful musical journey, attendees will get up close and personal with the quirky, unforgettable personalities that reside in America’s most famous arts community.

In addition to his songwriting and performing, Jules Shear holds a special place in music history as the original host of the groundbreaking series, MTV Unplugged. For the first 13 episodes, Jules set the stage for intimate and raw performances that became a cultural phenomenon.
ED SANDERS
Ed Sanders is an American poet, singer, activist, and countercultural icon best known as the co-founder of the 1960s underground folk-rock band The Fugs who blended folk, rock, and political satire, pioneering cheeky, provocative songs that challenged 1960s social norms. He operated the Peace Eye Bookstore in New York City’s East Village hub, which served as a gathering place for Beat poets and radicals. Ed Sanders in Woodstock, New York, where he has spent decades publishing the local Woodstock Journal newspaper alongside his wife, Miriam. He continues to publish his own work and perform with The Fugs.
