The Fugs live at Byrdcliffe

August 15 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

“I founded the Fugs with Tuli Kupferberg 59 years ago to combine music, poetry, topical themes, and universal dancing!!! The Fugs are very much here and now, and ready for a New World to blossom forth!!!”
— Ed Sanders

Do you know of The Fugs? If not, then you should.

The Fugs began on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1964. Their music combined rock and roll, humor, and protest that documented the 1960s underground scene and the American counterculture of that decade. They  gained notoriety through touring, their friendships with other countercultural figures, and their participation in antiwar politics, which included an attempt to levitate the Pentagon in 1967 as a protest of the Vietnam War.

The Fugs retired in 1969, but re-formed in the mid-’80s and have performed and recorded regularly ever since. The current line-up includes founder Ed Sanders, Steve Taylor on guitar, Coby Batty on drums, and Scott Petito on bass and keyboards.

Byrdcliffe is thrilled to welcome The Fugs to the historic Byrdcliffe Barn in Woodstock. In addition to two live performances, we will also screen the 2025 “Fugs Film!” at the Byrdcliffe Theater. The documentary features archival footage and interviews with Ed Sanders, Aline & R. Crumb, Lenny Kaye, Penny Arcade, Jeffrey Lewis and more to tell the story of NYC’s original punks. A conversation with director Chuck Smith and Ed Sanders will follow the screening.
