with one ear towards the river, with one eye to the land.
Outdoor Sculpture Installation by Austen Camille
These pieces were originally created by Byrdcliffe Artist-in-Resident Austen Camille for the Columbia Land Conservancy’s preserve, Greenport, just north of Hudson. Each piece was made in collaboration with local naturalists, focusing on different parts of the landscape and their connection to the Hudson River / Mahhicannituck.
The work evokes an understanding of the glacial history carved into the land, remediating the soil and rebuilding biodiversity. The colors have been chosen by hardware store employees along the river. Camille asked them, “What is the color of water?”; for many of them, ‘water’ is a place, a memory.
The outdoor sculpture with one ear towards the river, with one eye to the land is installed on Tinker Street, in the village of Woodstock, NY, just down the block from Byrdcliffe’s Kleinert/James Center for the Arts.
